To design each hammock, the artisans of Otavalo use fibres of cotton or acrylic pigmented in beautiful colours, hand-weaving the hammock designs with symbols of the indigenous culture. One hammock takes many hours to be finished. For this reason, the artisans use different kinds of knots and extraordinary colourful combinations that look good with all kind of home decoration. The hammocks with stripes are handmade with cotton, and the ones with fish and other designs and words are handmade with orlon, an acrylic fibre. The supports of the hammocks (each one approximately 36 cms) are resistant to the weather and sunlight because they are made with a high quality cotton thread fibre. The hammocks are comfortable and the softness of the materials permit them to be easily folded reduce space for storage. |
